REVEALED: WHY FEMI KUTI SHUNNED THE HEADIES 2012 { Hip Hop World Awards}

Those who attended The Headies 2012 awards show on Saturday October 20, were surprised when the show ended without musician Femi Kuti gracing the stage.
It had been highly publicized that the respected Afrobeat singer-saxophonist was to perform at the prestigious awards show -his first ever. He was also to be inducted into the well respected ‘Hall of Fame‘.
But Femi never showed up, rather he stayed behind at the New Afrika Shrine where the recently concluded Felabration 2012 was going on, NET placed a call to Yeni Kuti, Femi’s elder sister who didn’t divulge much information other than there was a ‘slight misunderstanding’.
But an inside source close to the Kuti family tells us it was more than a misunderstanding, allegedly having to do with the failure of the awards organizers and Kuti’s managers to reconcile last minute differences.
They were meant to pay Shoki shoki (Femi) some balance for logistics but as at Saturday evening we hadn’t received the money, so he stayed back at the Shrine for Felabration‘, a reliable source told us in anonymity. We could not immediately confirm this.
The Headies does not pay musicians for performances, and this is the first time a Hall of Fame inductee will stay away from the glamorous event.
No word yet from the organizers about why Femi was absent.

8 Foods That Can Improve Your Sex Life

91-steak-fajitas-lgn

Food and sex: you need ‘em both, you want ‘em both—and, as it turns out, they’re closely linked. A poor diet can lead to a lackluster sex life, while some foods have the power to make you feel sexier or prime your body for some mind-blowing booty. A healthy balance of vitamins and minerals keeps your endocrine system humming, which in turn regulates the production of the hormones estrogen and testosterone, essential for sexual desire and performance, says Cammi Balleck, PhD, a naturopathic physician and author of Making Happy Happen. “Enjoying an active sex life is essential to our wellbeing, and the foods we eat play a large role in ensuring we feel in the mood,” she says. So you could call good food and good sex a positive feedback loop. Here, eight foods (plus one meal!) with proven power to up the sexy.

Celery

It may seem like all this crunchy veggie has going for it is its low calorie count, but trust us, it’s sexy, too. Celery contains chemicals called androsterone and adrostenal, which make us feel more sexually attractive, says Balleck. She also notes that celery contains a small amount of male hormones, which can boost female arousal. Need more? “Celery’s balance of sodium and potassium make it an excellent diuretic,” says Linda DeVillers, PhD, author of Simple Sexy Food: 101 Tasty Aphrodisiac Recipes and Sensual Tips to Stir Your Libido and Feed Your Love. Translation: It can help banish decidedly unsexy bloat.

Lobster

Sure, part of its appeal is the special-occasion nature, not to mention all that licking of butter off your fingers. But you may eschew this crustacean in fear that a heavy, fatty meal will slow you down sexually. Turns out, lobster doesn’t deserve its tag as a high-fat food (except when slathered in said butter!). In fact, it’s a good source of lean protein, copper, zinc and selenium. Zinc, in particular, has been linked with a healthy male libido, says deVillers. Lobster is also chock full of the mineral phosphorus, which boosts both your sex drives, says Balleck. Plus, its concentration of essential fatty acids may increase sensitivity in your sex organs.

Leafy Green Veggies

It may not be easy being green, but it is sexy. Kale, spinach and other leafy greens are high in vitamin A, which is a great hormone-balancer because it supports proper endocrine function, says Balleck. “These foods also contain iodine, an essential mineral for proper function of your thyroid and adrenal glands, which in turn help regulate your mood,” she adds. It’s hard to feel great about sex if you don’t feel, well, great, so fill up on some greens.

Strawberries

It’s not just that these sweet, juicy fruits look and feel sexy (heck, they wear their fertility—their seeds—on the outside!). The health benefits that they pack give weight to their aphrodisiacal reputation. Aside from a ridiculously high amount of vitamin C, folic acid and fiber, strawberries are a good source of potassium, which helps you avoid fluid retention (goodbye mood-killing bloat). “They even contain omega-3 fatty acids, highly valued for their contribution to a healthy cardiovascular system,” says deVillers. And that’s essential for sexual arousal and responsiveness. Dip ‘em in dark chocolate (click to the next slide to see why), and you have a double whammy!

Dark Chocolate

Put aside for a moment how good it tastes and feels as it melts in your mouth—which is enough proof for most chocolate lovers that chocolate is for lovers. Dark chocolate contains a compound called phenylethylamine, an endorphin released in the brain when you’re feeling the warm fuzzies of falling in love. Share a few squares of high-quality dark chocolate before bed, and hopping in the sack will feel all the more delicious.

Nuts

Many varieties, including walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, pine nuts, Brazil nuts and peanuts, contain the essential amino acid l-arginine, which helps the brain do its job circulating neurotransmitters, brain chemicals that send messages to cells (like, “gee, this feels so good—more please!”). “And the fatty acids in nuts increase endorphins, making you feel more relaxed,” says Balleck. L-arginine also has been shown to dilate blood vessels, improving blood flow to the genitals, which in turn may enhance arousal and intensify orgasms.

Blueberries

Circulation is a big deal for both libido and sexual function—without good blood flow, arousal takes longer (it’s the blood rushing to your sexy bits that primes you for orgasm)—and blueberries are great for improving circulation. “Their high levels of antioxidants, which destroy cell-damaging free radicals, also make you look sexier,” says Balleck. What’s more: Blueberries contain dopamine, a neurotransmitter whose job is to stimulate your brain’s pleasure centers (the ones that make you say, “Ooh!”).

Watermelon

True, cool and juicy slabs of watermelon are a staple at G-rated family picnics, but this super-sweet fruit is also a sex-booster. First, bright-red watermelon contains an amino acid called l-citrulline, which helps relax and dilate blood vessels, naturally increasing blood flow to sexual organs and contributing to a hotter climax. Plus, watermelon’s mostly, you know, water—making it an anti-bloat machine. Incorporating a pit-spitting contest into sex play: Optional.

A Carb-and-Protein Balanced Meal

It’s not just about single food items. A combination can either make you feel sexy or leave you too sluggish or full to do the deed. Jennifer Hanes, DO, author of Lady in Weighting and the forthcoming The Princess Plan, explains that a woman’s libido is stimulated when the neurotransmitter serotonin is released in her brain. “Your serotonin level increases when you consume carbohydrates, but a carb binge can result in a massive sugar crash an hour or so later,” which leaves you too pooped to party. So skip the bottomless bowl of fettucine alfredo, and go for a meal that combines complex carbohydrates (like whole-grain pasta, brown rice, veggies and legumes, and not simple carbs like white pasta, white rice and white bread, which turn right to sugar) with protein. That’ll give you a lasting serotonin boost and stable blood sugar energy. Think steak fajitas with black beans or smoked chicken with baked beans. Then again, maybe the beans would lead to mood-killing, uh, aftershocks.

11 Foods You Should Never Eat Because They Age You

Forget anti-aging products: if you want to retain a youthful look, avoiding certain foods could help.
We did some research on foods you should avoid if you want to age gracefully. Below we compiled a list of 11 foods that, if consumed frequently, will age you.
Soda As a beverage high in sugar, soda tends to dehydrate the body. This fatigues the body and makes you look tired. "A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces. So if you weight 130 lbs, you need 65 ounces of water a day -- just over eight cups," according to GalTime.com.

Bras Make Breasts Saggier, French Study Finds

Save your money ladies–at least on your next bra.

After spending 15 arduous years studying breasts, sports medicine expert and French researcher, may rock the undergarment world with the mind-blowing discovery that bras aren’t so miraculous after all. In fact, he found, they do nothing to support breasts, and may actually drive them south to droopyville.
Jean-Denis Rouillon, from Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Besancon in France, took on the cumbersome task of studying the effects of bras on women’s breasts. He found that the foundation garments (women have come to rely on for support après the infamous bra burnings of the 70’s) do nothing to prevent breasts from sagging — and may even increase it.

“Our first results confirm the hypothesis that the bra is a false need,” Rouillon said, according to France Info. “Medically, physiologically, anatomically, the breast does not benefit from being deprived of gravity. Instead, it languishes with a bra.”
Rouillon went on to say that, “Wearing a bra inhibits the growth of breast tissue and contributes to poor posture and muscle tone, he said, adding that “the breast will gradually degrade.”
The lengthy study involved 330 women aged 18-35, whose breasts were measured at regular intervals with a slide rule and caliper.
Those who didn’t wear bras saw a nipple lift of about 7 mm a year towards the shoulder. Their breasts also became firmer, and stretch marks faded.
One of the study’s participants, Capucine, 28, who stopped wearing a bra two years ago, told France-Info, “You breathe better, you stand straighter and you have less back pain.”
Rouillon’s study will be a hard break on the women’s intimates’ industry. According to Business Week, lingerie generates over $11 billion a year in revenues.

Can Drinking Red Wine Boost Men's Testosterone Levels ?

It’s what puts hair on a man’s chest and can also assist in building bigger, stronger muscles fairly quickly. It’s the force behind their sex drive and may be the reason why as they age, they feel weaker and perhaps – depressed.
Usually after 30, men begin to experience a slight decline in their testosterone levels and it is to be expected. But not to worry! According to new research recently published in Nutrition Journal, quercetin - a compound in red wine – can both inhibit the way the hormone is excreted, as well as increase the level of it circulating within the body.

Testosterone is usually eliminated from the body through urine by way of an enzyme called UGT2B17 that attaches molecules to testosterone so that it can get rid of it. The quercetin in red wine seems to block UGT2B17, which elevates T levels in the bloodstream and keeps it from leaving the body.
Researchers aren’t sure yet if drinking a couple glasses of wine a day will ensure that T levels will soar sky high or increase vitality, but they do recommend not indulging in alcohol too frequently. Men who have the tendency of drinking too much end up having decreased levels of testosterone, not to mention other negative health problems.
If you’re not a wine drinker, there are other options for increasing your natural testosterone. There are effective testosterone supplements, or you can take advantage of a T boost from these natural foods.

Garden Egg Useful For Weight Reduction - says Nutritionist

garden-egg

Hajiya Jummai Hassan, a nutritionist with Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, has said that garden egg also known as eggplant could help to reduce body weight.
Hassan on Monday said that eggplant, also referred to as “aubergine’’ had low calorie, low sodium and low protein, high in dietary fibre and potassium.

Egg plant is a fruit but it is classified under vegetables, if you really want to lose weight you should eat fresh garden egg.
“When you take garden egg, it fills the tummy because of its fibre content and it helps reduce the food you consume, thereby reducing the calories and body weight.’’
She added that due to the high fibre content in eggplant, it helped to reduce bad cholesterol in the body, thereby protecting the heart.
The nutritionist said that garden egg helped to regulate the blood pressure, saying that it also helped to maintain and regulate the function of the heart.
“Because of the high fibre and low soluble carbohydrate content of the eggplant, it controls glucose absorption and reduces the risk of hypertension.
“It is very low in calorie content, so when you consume it and you are diabetic it suppresses the sugar level and brings the blood pressure down.’’
Hassan also said that garden egg had an anti-ulcer remedy, which could be used as treatment for ulcer.
“It is not that it protects you from having ulcer but when you have it and you take garden egg, it has that-anti ulcer remedy that suppresses it.’’
The nutritionist said that patients with glaucoma should eat a lot of garden egg because it served as an antioxidant, which prevented cells in the body from damage.
She said that garden egg leaf was also useful in treating snake bites, “which indicates that every part of the plant is useful.’’
The nutritionist said that garden egg could be eaten fresh or prepared into stew and eaten with yam, rice or any other food.

How To Get The Best Shave

SHAVING is a daily chore most men have to contend with almost for the rest of their lives. There are no rules about shaving, but there are basic shaving tips that can make it quick and easy. Shaving is more that just picking up a razor and dragging it across your face until the stubble’s gone. A really good shave, requires a little more effort and know-how.
Even if you’ve been shaving for years, you might learn something new about what you need to do to get the best shave possible.
The first rule in shaving is patience. Don’t rush through a shave. A rushed shave is a good way to abuse your face. Rather, spend the necessary time prepping your skin for the razor.
Start by washing your face. Facial cleansers work best because they help soften the protein in the hair. Avoid harsh soaps, and wash away hair-softening oils. Leave the cleanser on your face for one minute before rinsing.
Next, lather up with shaving cream or gel. Choose one labeled “for sensitive skin” if you need it. Then let it sit for two or three minutes. You can comb your hair or brush your teeth to pass the time.
This is an important step that really softens the hair and makes a one-pass shave possible. The longer you let it sit, the better, although spending the time is not always practical.
When you are brushing up the lather, don’t rely on your fingers to lather your shaving cream. Get a brush.
A good brush really pushes the cream into the hair and makes it much easier to shave. Use a badger hair brush to lift the hairs and really coat them with cream.
When it comes to razors, there’s no need to fool with multiblade razors. Multiblade razors are okay, but a single blade will work just as fine. The important thing to keep mind, that the blade you use must be sharp. Discard it if you see a nick in the blade; otherwise, if you shave most days, change blades every week or two.
How often you must change blades is another good reason to stick with inexpensive single blades rather than three- or five-blade razors, which can be quite costly. The more expensive the blade, the less likely you may be to change them as often as you should.

10 Proven Ways to Improve your Attractiveness

Britain Holds Ceremonial Funeral for Thatcher (Iron Lady), Former Prime Minister 1979 - 1990

"Iron Lady"

More than 2000 people from various parts of the world on Wednesday in London  gathered at the St. Paul’s cathedral for the funeral service of former British Prime Minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher.
Thatcher, who was  British Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990, and leader of the British Conservative party died on April 8 following a long battle with stroke.
She is being given a ceremonial funeral a step lower than a state burial in recognition of leadership role as British head of government which earned her the name “Iron Lady’’.
The Ceremonial funeral started with a procession in central London amid tight  security, following  threats of protest by anti-Thatcher groups.
No fewer than 4000 police officers were detailed to provide security in London in order to forestall any unrest or security breach in the course of the event..
Thatcher’s hearse was flanked by police outriders as it left the British parliament building (Westminster) where her body lay overnight to travel to St. Clement Danes, the Royal Air Force church on strand where it was transferred to a gun carriage.
Her coffin covered with Union jack was carried in the gun carriage to the cathedral with military guard of honour.

London Police Suspect Naomi Oni Of Pouring Acid On Herself

The police in charge of the acid-burn case of  20-year old Nigerian Naomi Oni in East London last year are considering the possibility that she might have inflicted the injury on herself.
Naomi Oni, 20, sparked a UK-wide fundraising appeal after she was left scarred for life in an apparently random acid attack. But officers are now said to be considering the possibility Oni did it herself after they discovered she had researched acid attacks online before she was maimed at the end of last year.
They are examining her laptop computer amid reports she looked up information on Katie Piper, the former model who has campaigned for facial disfigurement victims since she was scarred in an acid attack in 2008. Victoria’s Secret shop assistant Naomi claims a woman in a niqab threw the unidentified liquid over her as she walked home in Dagenham, east London, on December 30.
She suffered full thickness burns to her face, arm, hand and leg and was blinded for two days. After spending nearly a month in hospital, she made an emotional plea for her alleged attacker to come forward. Naomi said: “I just want this person to come forward. How can they sleep at night knowing they have done this?
“I have stopped hating them. I just feel sorry for them and I wonder what’s going on in their life to want to make someone else suffer like that.”
But detectives have quizzed her family members on whether Oni could have hurt herself. Naomi’s law student student boyfriend Ato Owede, 23, said: “The police are not doing enough to catch the person. “I think they did ask her mum if she did this herself — that’s just crazy. They need to keep on investigating.
“They’re concentrating on the wrong things at the moment in terms of her researching acid attacks and stuff like that. “They are just coming to a silly conclusion.”
She previously told The Sun: “The police haven’t been able to find anyone — they even asked my aunt if I had done it to myself, which really upset me. “Why would anyone do this to themselves?” She also appeared on ITV’s This Morning and has signed deal for another interview with Take a Break magazine.
The Met Police confirmed they had seized a number of items from Oni and said they were following a number of lines of inquiry. A spokesman said: “Inquiries are ongoing. “A number of items have been seized during the course of the investigation and they are being examined as part of ongoing inquiries.”

Stop Wearing Bras, Scientists Warn Women

Bras do nothing to help support a woman’s breasts and could even be causing damage, research has found.
The Telegraph of London reported on Friday that for years, women have been taught of the virtues of a good bra in order to make the most of their assets and defy the pull of gravity.
Now a French study has claimed that breasts gain no benefit from underwear support and that women would do better to go without them.
Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon of Besançon University spent 15 years studying the anatomy of 330 women, before coming to the conclusion that bras are a “false necessity.”
Professor Rouillon said: “Medically, physiologically and anatomically, breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity.”
The study found that breasts were firmer and sagged less in the women who did not wear a bra, and such women were no more likely than others to suffer from back pain.
The sports scientist, who has been researching the subject since 1997, using a slide rule and a caliper, found a 7mm difference in the height of bosoms; with those who went without a bra faring best against gravity.
Professor Rouillon suggested that breasts become “dependent” on lingerie support once women start wearing it, meaning that supporting muscle is under-used and degrades more quickly.
He said his initial results “validated the hypothesis that the bra is a false ‘necessity’” but that he would not advise women who have relied on bras for years to cast them aside.”
Some of the women who took part in the experiment, carried out at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (University Hospital) in Besançon, said stopping wearing a bra had even helped ease back pains.
British research on post-menopausal women has previously suggested that those who wear a bra are more likely to suffer breast pain.

The temperature is going too high; the sun is burning down on us, unforgivably so. As the weather heats on, you should take skin care therapies. During the hot weather, the need of your tone differs when it is cold. In hot weather, you skin fights with heat, humidity & damaging ultra violet rays. And, even if you want to take cold dips in the swimming pool, you need to protect your body skin from water chlorine.

Jennifer Iwuanyanwu of Face-Craft skin beauty shares some handy tips on how to achieve a glowing skin this hot weather:

• Change your sunscreen lotion. You need a heavy SPF (sun protection factor) sunscreen lotion in hot weather. Pick one that is soft and oil-free. It should be applied generously after the usual morning cream as it serves as a shield from the sun.
• Use exfoliates thrice a week. It will help to removing your skin’s external layer of dead skin will help refresh dull and dry skin. Pick a gentle face scrub with smooth and thin particles. Scrubbers that are too rough will damage your skin.

Untold Story of A Pastor Arrested Over Robbery Attack at MMI Airport

Pastor Ibikunle (left) & informant Abdullahi

On Tuesday, Lagos State Police Command, paraded seven suspects of a robbery gang that attacked the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, last month, killed two policemen and injured several others.
Among the suspects, was the General Overseer of The way of Joy church located in Egbe, a Lagos suburb. The clergy , identified as  Pastor Ibikunle Olarewaju John, confessed to Crime Guard during the parade, that he administered  an oath of secrecy on the gang members, on the day they attacked the Muritala Mohammed Airport.
Members of the gang  discovered to have come all the way  from Kwara, Osun, Ibadan and Ogun states, during interrogation, confessed to have attacked same airport last year, where they carted away  N600 Million.  They also stormed the  airport on again on March 13, 2013 at about 7.30 pm.
But this time around, they were reportedly engaged in a gun battle by two policemen attached to Apapa division said to be on  official assignment at the airport. Unfortunately for the policemen, they were gunned down in the process. But before they breathed their last, they managed to kill a member of the gang.

The robbers said to have succeeded in carting away over N10 Million from a Bureau-De -change operators,  went straight to  their hideout inside a bush in Ijebu-Ode, where they shared their loot.
Dedicates cars with members from loot
In this interview with Pastor Ibikunle, he disclosed that his share of the loot was N500,000. But investigation carried out by Crime Guard, showed that he might have got more than that.  A  suspected member of the gang confirmed Crime Guard’s claim. A further attestation to this claim, was the discovery that Pastor Ibikunle bought two cars  apparently from his share of the loot, two weekes later.

During Crime Guard’s visit to The Way of Joy Church, located on Alliu Street, Egbe, Thursday, it was discovered that the church was built with planks. And locating the church was a difficult task, as there was no sign board. It took Crime Guard  about an hour search to locate it .
On closer look , it was discovered that the church had been  sealed. Although, no one agreed to talk about Pastor Ibikunle and the church when approached, apparently for fear of being arrested .
Finally, a man who pleaded anonymity  opened up and asked :“Are you a member of the church”? The reporters shook their heads.
He further said, “ if you know what is good for you, better leave there before you will get yourself into trouble. The  white garment church was sealed last week after the arrest of the Pastor.. Some policemen came last week and arrested him and before we knew it, we started hearing he was a member of a robbery gang. Even , the whole newspapers in Nigeria carried the news two days ago”
Before his arrest, Pastor Ibikunle was said to have dedicated two vehicles ,during which he hosted members of his church and friends to a buffet.
“Although he is an easy- going fellow who by every dint of appearance never exhibited any character  of  a robber. We usually saw people coming in and out of  the church on  daily. And on Sundays, there were usually church services.
Towards the end of the month, he treated his members and  friends who came in posh cars to a party, in celebration of his newly purchased cars. It was not long that we heard he bought them with the proceeds from the robbery  operation at the airport. It was after his arrest that I believed the popular saying that facial appearance is indeed deceptive”, another resident who earlier declined to speak on the issue said.
Wife absconded with children
From Crime Guard’s findings, it was discovered also that when operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery  Squad stormed  the clergy’s one-room apartment  located on the same building with the church, to effect  his arrest, his wife was not at home.

Pastor Ibikunle's The Way of Joy Church, Egbe

On arrival, she was said to have visited  Ikotun, Ejigbo and Idimu police stations in search for her  husband. She was said to have  also raised alarm that he could have been abducted by men in police uniform.
But when news of her husband’s alleged indulgence in criminal activities reached her, she was said to have been spelled bound.
A  family friend to the Ibikunles told Crime Guard that, “ she came crying to us that some men in plain clothes came to pick her husband. But when she discovered the truth at SARSs where we eventually found him, she broke down. At first she did not believe the claim, as she thought it could have been  cooked up. But when her husband confessed to her, she said that was the height  she could take from him.
“More painful according to her, is the fact that she said she asked her husband where he got the money with which he bought the cars , only for him to tell her it was given to him by someone  who got healed of a terminal disease after a deliverance section with him.”
As at the time Crime Guard visited, Mrs Ibikunle was nowhere around the church’s premises. But a neigbour later  revealed that she was seen packing her belongings out of the house, with her children. The resident could however, not say her whereabouts. Since the arrest, no church member had reportedly come to worship there.
I spent 14 hours in the bush waiting for the gang members—Pastor Ibikunle
Speaking with Crime Guard, Pastor Ibikunle revealed that he spent 14  hours in the gang’s hideout, inside a bush in Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun State, on the day of the robbery attack at the international airport.

Hear him, “ Before  that day, one of them, Asiwaju, said I should come and administer an oat of secrecy on members of his gang. I invited them to come to my church but they said they would not want to  arouse  suspicion. At the end, I went to Ijebu-Ode.  I waited at a designated point before a member of the gang came and took me to their hideout inside the bush.
I administered the oath on them  about 1pm. You will not understand if I start explaining because it is a spiritual thing. I said some incantation into a horn and added some other things.
I waited there until they came back around 11.30pm.,before  leaving next day, with N500,000. I was  instructed not to tell any one about what transpired.I swore, that is all my involvement. I never followed them to rob”, he said.
Asked if he informed his wife about his mission, he replied, “ No, I did not. I only told her when leaving that I was going to pray over night for a ‘big man’ who would not like to come to our area. And when I came back, I told her the money was given to me by the ‘big man’”.
I regret my involvement
In an emotional laden voice, Pastor Ibikunle looked at Crime Guard , battling hard not to betray his emotion, “ Am I going to die? He asked with a tear filled eyes. Ah! he exclaimed. I would have remained in my cubicle as a poor man than heeding the advice of the gang. Now,  I am left without nothing! My condition is even worse.

“I’m appealing to every member of my church  to forgive me for embarrassing them. This is the devil’s handiwork. I can not even face members of my family now…”, the 37 year-old father of  two paused and bent his head, refusing to speak any further.

Boko Haram Smuggled Explosives into Lagos in Empty Petrol Tankers-Chief of Army Staff

The plan by Boko Haram to bomb selected locations in Lagos had reached advance stage before it was nipped in the bud. The sect had successfully smuggled explosives into Lagos in empty petrol tankers exposing the fact that they had a through and detailed organization for their plans.

The Chief Of Army Staff - Lieutenant General Azubike Ihejirika, revealed this bombshell yesterday during the second leg of the interactive session on Military-Media Relations in Nigeria.

Ihejirika said: “The new information at our disposal revealed that these suspected terrorists had smuggled in the large quantity of explosives into Lagos in empty fuel tankers.”

It would be recalled that some terrorists were arrested in Lagos at Ijora with sophisticated explosives and artillery. Although many of them were from Northern Nigeria, it is suspected that some others were from neighboring West African nations of Niger and Mali.

Security in Lagos has been heightened even as the Federal Government is now shifting on its earlier stance not to grant amnesty to the Islamic sect.

The Menace Of Drug Addiction

The mind exists, yet not structural; but the brain, as an organ, facilitates the functions of the mind, hence the aphorism that the mind and the brain are two sides of a coin.

We know that whatsoever alters the function of the brain has a consequent correlation on the mind. The chemicals that facilitate human behaviour through the brain and allied structures are regulated by a physiological system that does not require supply from extraneous sources, except in the case of an illness when drugs are prescribed.

Every society has always had to grapple with the fundamental human needs for meaning, pleasure and motivation. I think what separates us from animals is that our brain, which facilitates the functions of the mind, also has sophisticated needs.

In adolescence, the mind acquires an abstractive appetite with the hypothetico-deductive reasoning when ideas are tested in the environment and feedbacks are analysed to be incorporated to modify human behaviour. This exercise is not without its frustrations, which is the most outstanding challenge across life span.

When we are adjusted to the rhythm of life, the biological clock helps to make available appropriate chemicals from the innate store to fulfill these psychic needs. When there is an experience of a low feeling, human beings mount coping strategies, which could be mystical or religious or the abuse of drugs.

We have various brands of alcohol and other substances capable of modulating the brain to give a transient experience of fulfillment, release and energy. Some over-the-counter drugs are misused, especially for sleep and for temporary escape from the challenges of life.

Marijuana is one of the most popular and the age of initiation is as low as nine years. There are other local substances in our villages that are not in the NDLEA gazette of drugs of abuse.  Some can excite the normal functions of the brain, just like some slow it down with varied experiences in the mind. These substances, no doubt, can facilitate a transient feeling of energy and fulfillment, but with a gamut of damages to the same organ that is crucial for our participation in life. They are capable of causing mental illness, even when there is no such history in the family.

Drug addiction is responsible for a certain percentage of our youths who take to armed robbery and wild, expensive adventures. A good number of early school dropouts is traceable to drug addiction. A reasonable number of HIV/AIDS cases is due to sexual recklessness under the influence of these drugs. Violence — whether political, religious or ethnic — is facilitated by the use of drugs, especially marijuana, which makes the target appear like ants. Routes of administration, especially when injected, can cause infections of vital organs as well as HIV/AIDS as needles are shared.

Technically, any substance that impairs our judgment and incapacitates us to fulfill our basic social roles to self, family and society at large is dangerous. Alcohol consumption is gradually becoming a big issue, especially in the context of our current socio-economic situation where increasing number of family heads deposit a sizeable amount of their salary at the beer parlour before thinking of school fees, house rent or medical bills.

Such folks continue to drink, even against their doctor’s advice. A good number of our road traffic accidents are preventable if drivers can abstain from the use of drugs, especially alcohol. Some serious top-level government decisions are taken under the influence of drugs, with the attendant grave consequences for generations unborn. Marital conflicts, attended by physical assault, are very common when a partner escapes into the world of drugs as a way of coping with the marriage.

Parenting becomes impaired as children grow unsupervised, making them vulnerable to peer pressure that links them to the drug culture. Even when a reasonable amount of wealth is acquired, a child who is hooked on drugs will squander it to satisfy his cravings. The challenge of drug addiction is that the victim will always require an increasing amount of the substance to achieve the original feel.

Prevention is the key word; and the most vulnerable period is adolescence, although some start at midlife and at some other downturns in life. Parents need to be alert to abrupt changes in behaviour of their children who may start withdrawing from family discussions, acquire new but strange friends, become more argumentative, come home late and disobey instructions. Teachers can also watch out for drug groups and institute counselling as soon as possible. Sound religious instruction as an adaptive coping mechanism for life challenges is indispensable.

There will always be a need for established cases to be referred to mental health experts, because the patient will need immediate intervention as he/she can become very dangerous to self, family and society at large.

You can’t play the ostrich with age

Fruits

Many people wrongly assume that we start ageing only when grey hair sprouts here and there on our heads, or when wrinkles start to appear on certain parts of the body, especially on the foreheads, corners of the eyes, or around the mouth. Scientists say this is not necessarily the case, as some parts of the body actually wear out long before we look old.
For some — and, depending on lifestyle — physical effects of ageing are not immediately pronounced on their physique, especially the face. They are still able to flaunt their ‘ageless’ looks well after their 40th birthday; but even at that, it is an undeniable fact that after age 35, many parts of the body start declaring independence and they embark on south-ward movement, even if gradually, but surely.
For women, age 35 is as tricky as it is decisive. Experts say by mid-30s, women’s breasts start losing tissue and fat, reducing in size and fullness. They contend that sagging starts properly at 40 and the areola (the area surrounding the nipple) can shrink considerably.
For men, researchers say, the penis undergoes significant changes as a man moves from his sexual prime — around age 30 — into middle age and on to older age. The Journal of Sexual Medicine reports that blood flow to the head of the penis reduces at this age, and there is a slow loss of pubic hair. “As testosterone wanes, the penis gradually reverts to its prepubertal, mostly hairless, state,” the journal claims.
In terms of size, scientists say, the penis tends to undergo an actual (and irreversible) reduction in size, length and thickness. “If a man’s erect penis is six inches long when he is in his 30s, it might be five or five-and-a-half inches when he reaches his 60s or 70s,” says the director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego, Dr. Irwin Goldstein.
Experts also say the lung capacity slowly starts to decrease from the age of 20, and by the age of 40, some people can start experiencing breathlessness, partly because the muscles and the rib cage which control breathing stiffen up. It’s then harder to work the lungs and also means some air remains in the lungs after breathing out, causing breathlessness.
The heart, too, starts ageing at 40, as it is said to pump blood less effectively around the body as we get older. Scientists say this is because blood vessels become less elastic, while arteries can harden or become blocked because of fatty deposits forming on the coronary arteries due to eating too much saturated fat. When this happens, the blood supply to the heart is reduced, resulting in painful angina.
Again, the bones start ageing at 35, according to a professor of rheumatology at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool, Roberts Moots. He notes that though children’s bone growth is rapid, as the skeleton takes just two years to renew itself completely. “In adults, the same process can take 10 years,” he says. “Until the mid-20s, bone density is still increasing; but at 35, bone loss begins as part of the natural ageing process.”
The skin, muscles, hair growth and fertility level all take a bashing after age 35. Any wonder that researchers say as we hit 35, stress level is likely to increase, what with the threats of stress-related conditions like obesity, Type-2 diabetes, brain atrophy, heart disease, high blood pressure and more. Ditto the belly fat, wrinkles and decreased libido. And that is why you need certain survival kits to keep you going, look and feel better till the ultimate end.
One easy way to beat stress, which, experts say heightens the ageing process, is through healthy diet, by avoiding salty and fatty foods. Dietician and weight loss expert, Dr. Angela Okudo, explains that as we age, hormonal changes make a flat belly almost unachievable even if you watch your diet.
She says, “After 35, your sex hormones fluctuate, making your body retain more water and your gastrointestinal tract not as efficient, resulting in bloating.”
She advises regular intake of pineapple juice — an excellent source of potassium, manganese and vitamins C and B6. Pineapple juice is also described as a natural diuretic and helps to flush out any excess toxins in the kidneys and liver.
It is also described as an all-natural belly flattener, as it contains digestive enzymes — bromelain — that help break down the food in the gut that could otherwise cause bloating and gas.
Generally, fighting wrinkles become a preoccupation for both men and women as the chronological age progresses, though women tend to engage in this more than men are wont to. Okudo says avoiding exposure to the sun, quitting smoking, treating the skin gently by resisting the temptation to use every highly-promoted skin product that hits the market, are some healthy ways of delaying the onset of wrinkles.
A gynaecologist, Dr. Fatai Aromire, says one of the biggest complaints from women over 35 is that sex gets more difficult and less enjoyable than it once was. He says this is due to natural changes to the anatomy. To put the fun back in this all-important area of life, Aromire recommends the use of lubricants.
The scientists also say people over 35 need some vitamins that are essential to the prevention of cancer, strengthening the bones, keeping the heart healthy, and generally make you look younger.
Okudo says, ideally, the majority of the ageing person’s nutrients should come from a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, while taking multivitamin supplements also help in a lot of ways when prescribed by a competent physician.
She recommends vitamins A, C, D and E, as well as the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, B6, biotin, B12, and folic acid). “Getting the vitamins you need can boost your immunity, prevent accelerated aging, and help you lose weight,” she counsels.
Foods that contain biotin include walnuts and other nuts, eggs, carrots, milk, oatmeal, lettuce, tomato, onions and cucumbers. Those that are rich in pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) include liver, cold water fish, avocado, egg yolk, fish eggs and mushrooms.
The physicians also recommend calcium intake, not just for bone protection, but to also keep the muscles strong. They recommend pairing calcium with magnesium in recommended dosages, to help with absorption. The doctors also advise that those using calcium supplements must take it two hours after eating or taking multivitamins, in order to prevent calcium from blocking the body from absorbing other nutrients.
Calcium-rich foods include okro, yogurt, milk, sardines, dark leafy greens like spinach, and fortified cereals such as corn flakes.
Ophthalmologist, Dr. Steve Odiase, notes that the eye happens to be one of the organs of the body that readily subscribe to ageing. He says, “As you age, you must endeavour to keep your eyes sharp by eating lutein-rich foods. This is because lutein is a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent cataracts and macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in individuals over the age of 60.”
As the years roll by, researchers say the ageing person undergoes emotional changes in mood, as evidenced by crankiness, stress, and, sometimes, depression. They recommend fortified cereals, especially those fortified with vitamin B6, and bananas, believed to reduce crankiness, irritability and mood swings.

721 policemen rendered homeless in Onitsha, Anabara state

NO fewer than 721 policemen and their families residing in the barracks at the Central Police Station, CPS, and Police Area Command, Onitsha have been rendered homeless following the demolition of their buildings and shops by the Anambra State police command.
While the affected policemen accused the state police command of being insensitive, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Balla Nasarawa who confirmed the development described them as illegal occupants.
At the barrack, Thursday, there was confusion as many stranded policemen were seen discussing in clusters while some of them were removing their belongings to safety.
Speaking with reporters in Onitsha, one of the victims who is an Inspector (names withheld) said he has been living in the barracks for the past 21 years, adding that he had consistently been paying rent to the police authority and described the statement credited to the CP as untrue.
He said: “It was yesterday morning (Wednesday) that we saw to our greatest surprise, a quit notice pasted on our doors signed by the Officer in Charge of Provost, ordering us to vacate our houses and that our wives should vacate their shops within 48 hours, without prior notice to that effect.
“Before now, we had no problem with anybody as we have been paying our rents to the relevant police authority and even some of us have just signed what we call accommodation money last January and our money is being deducted from our salaries.
To just wake up and kick us out of our homes is an act of wickedness.
Also speaking on behalf of Police Officers Wives Association, POWA, shop owners association, Mrs. Maria Iguh lamented that the on going demolition of their shops was being done in bad faith and called on President Goodluck Jonathan to come to their aid.
According to her, they bought the shops from POWA, adding that they have remained and kept their own part of the bargain to pay tenancy to the police authority and expressed surprise at the shortness of time given to them to vacate their shops.
“We bought these shops from POWA and since then we have been paying to the police for what they called security fee and we obeyed and painted our shops in police colour. Then this morning, we saw quit notice ordering us to vacate within 48 hours. We are in trouble because some of us have lost shelter and their shops and our children will soon resume school and we don’t have any other place to go,” she said.
She called on President Jonathan, Inspector General of Police and Police Service Commission to look into the matter so as to save them from the trouble of losing their houses and source of livelihood which they legally acquired.
